The Company
3F is a Special Brand of Company
The United Federation of Danish Workers, commonly known as 3F, is a special brand of company. Denmark’s largest trade union, with approximately 2000 employees in its headquarters and offices across the country, 3F is strong in negotiating collective agreements between employers and workers, and is expert in labor market legislation. Members of the organization come from a broad range of private and public sector companies, from transportation, building and construction, and manufacturing industries to forestry and delivery and distribution of newspapers and magazines.
3F offers services to help all members, regardless of industry or sector, with an array of real employment concerns, such as securing good wages and working conditions, legal aid, strike pay during official disputes, and advice about education and in-service training.
Focus Areas
From Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets to High-Tech Information ManagementHistorically, 3F has used Microsoft Office products, such as Excel spreadsheets, to manage HR activities. This approach was functional, but it did pose challenges in areas like maintaining clear communications, and it was also difficult to share and access information across the organization.
One of the reasons that 3F chose MindKey™ HCM was the product interface’s close resemblance to Microsoft Office Outlook, which makes it easy and approachable. 3F wanted to give managers and employees an uncomplicated system that they will quickly adopt and start using.
“Because we’re relatively few working in the HR department, the system’s ease of use is a big advantage because we believe that it will encourage our people to really engage in our processes. Not only that, we also expect fewer support calls from people in our office, or even other parts of the country, who need help using the system,” starts P. Keld Mortensen, Personnel Director, 3F.
“That was one reason,” adds Linda Hebeltoft, who is an HR Consultant with 3F. “The other was that MindKey HCM was the only system we found that meets all of our requirements. We sent an four page functional requirements document to several solution providers, and what we discovered was that that the other systems met some, even most, but not all, of our requirements; they all lacked one component or another. For example, one solution had education and course administration features, but lacked facilities for handling employee administrative information.”
“We also looked at some of the larger systems, but quickly discovered that these were on the other end of the scale, and offered much more than we really need or, more importantly, wanted to pay for,” smiles P. Keld Mortensen.
3F has High Expectations3F’s investment in MindKey HCM is one that the organization takes very seriously, and has high expectations for seeing strong returns.
“First and foremost we expect that the system will make our work easier. Because employees can not only maintain their basic information, they can also work with more advanced data such as their competencies, and their efforts toward development,” says P. Keld Mortensen. “As we gradually involve more and more people in the organization, we also anticipate that once employees see the value of increasing the visibility of their abilities, they’ll become more eager and engaged in the development and processes we think are so important.”
“We are going to continue with most the administrative processes we’re already using; we’re just making them more professional, more efficient, by leveraging new technology. What we expect is that this will free us to think more strategically and be more business-oriented when planning development activities, concludes P. Keld Mortensen.”
